A tight knit club pulling together through the pandemic - London Bears VC.

  1. Tell us a bit about your club history, achievement over the years.

Last season we celebrated our 10th anniversary at London Bears Volleyball, with our two men’s and women’s teams finishing third in Division One of the London League and progressing a few rounds in the National Cup. Our two teams are made up of 18 different nationalities which creates a unique culture in the club. The women’s team have reached as high as second in the Premier League, with the Men pushing for promotion to the Premier League this season after last seasons promotion push being cut short due to COVID 19.

2. How has the COVID 19 impacted on your club?

Dealing with the finances has been challenging but we have a strong club treasurer and club committee to make the best of it. With the men having two games to play against sides we had beaten earlier in the season, there was a chance for us to reach the playoffs for promotion to the premiership. However, many clubs were in the same position across the UK so we have used it as a platform to create an even more tight-knit club when volleyball can resume safely.

3. What have you been doing to keep in touch with you players/ members?

The club has hosted quiz nights, taken on volleyball viral challenges such as the ‘50 one-hand seated bump’, and more recently individuals have started their preseason training and conditioning to get ahead for the following season!

4. Tells us about any of your clubs members who have gone above and beyond during this difficult time?

Men’s outside hitters Robin Bachor and Luke Richardson have kept us entertained with their quizzes and volleyball related challenges, as well as Rebecca Jones, our treasurer who has had to deal with keeping the club afloat during this difficult time.

5. What do you think will be the biggest challenges when returning to the court?

All of the club are absolutely raring to get playing again, so any challenges will be faced head on and we hope this will help us achieve our goals for the season. On the bright side I think one or two of us who have enjoyed the lockdown a little too much may struggle to keep up on the first few training sessions...

6. What support could the foundation offer clubs once the lockdown is over?

Equipment is urgently needed to keep ourselves playing at a high level and to attract new members. Our goal is to have a new development team this season, so resources are needed to help us provide the best environment possible for their development.

Thank you Sam Jones
