National Volunteers' Week - Donald Deans
Donald Deans
When did you first become a volunteer?
“I started volunteering as a volleyball coach at the age 18, alongside playing myself so it was a natural progression”.
Why did you become a volunteer?
“The reason was a combination of my personal interest in the sport, a willingness to give something back to the community, and the fulfilment that comes from making a positive impact and contributing to its growth and success at the grassroots level. I have benefited from this sport – meeting fantastic people, building friendship, creating a supportive network, learning teamwork, discipline, and perseverance”.
What roles do you have / have you had previously?
“Currently, I am UKAF technical director and London Volleyball Association non-executive member and got 23 years of experience as a volleyball coach in the King Crown’s services and supporting Gary Beckford during All Nations tournaments for over 20 years. There are many moments that I am proud of as volleyball volunteer, but my highlights are coaching police women team in 3 European tournaments and getting into last 8, coaching armed services in Australia, coaching Polonia’s women team and finishing second in Super League, coaching borough of Camden in London Youth Games and finishing first for boys and girls, while being London Volleyball Development officer.”
How do you encourage new volunteers into the sport?
“I am always open to other people who would like to join the volleyball community and encourage them through support to ensure new volunteers feel confident and prepared. I believe that providing resources, strong mentorship, and clear guidelines can help new volunteers feel valued and competent”.
Thank-you so much for your time, Donald!
