Winner of Services to Refereeing in 2008 - Dave Gardner (East Midlands)
Anyone who has played volleyball in the East Midlands will know Dave, he is always the first to volunteer when a referee is needed. He has been part of the East Midlands Executive Committee for as long as I can remember. But having known his for many years I found out some very interesting things about him when he answered his quick 6.
How were you first introduced to Volleyball?
I was first introduced to volleyball as part of my rehabilitation after plane crash.
I was parachuting at the time back in 1981 unfortunately the planes stall worming device activated on take-off the pilot decided to go for it as it had happened before,
The plane managed to reached an altitude of about 400 feet before mother nature took over and forced the plane back to earth making a very hard landing.
Putting me in hospital in traction for a few months, then came the long period rehab, that's when I started to play a kind of volleyball, letting the ball bounce once before playing it over the net the only problem was my aid the walking stick would get in the way, little things are sent to try use. Something positive came out of a very frightening situation.
What was the most difficult skill to master on court?
I would have loved to have mastered the dig on court, i was always envious of a a good back court passer.
What makes you most proud of our Volleyball Family?
We are one big family, I really enjoy the camaraderie between the Volleyball England referees.
What was your greatest Volleyball achievement?
It would have to be in 2008 when i was nominated and won the service to refereeing award. A very proud moment.
What are you missing most during the lockdown?
I am a real people person and missing being with the rest of my volleyball family and friends. I’m looking forward to a good catch up.
What are you looking forward to most once the lockdown is over?
I am really looking forward to getting back on the stand, i am really missing refereeing volleyball and meeting other people who are as passionate about volleyball as I am.
