National Volunteers’ Week - Freda Bussey

Freda Bussey

When did you first become a volunteer? What was the catalyst?

"I first volunteered as a player coach when I founded Ashcombe Volleyball Club for the pupils at The Ashcombe School, where I was a P.E. teacher. I really saw what fabulous talent is in every school. The girls from one class became a National DIv 1 team with several of them playing as England International players. I am still secretary and Head Coach at Ashcombe VC. All volunteer posts".

Why volunteer for volleyball?

"I was as encouraged to become a coach tutor by Dave Pope, a role I still enjoy 40 years later".

What roles, as well as Board Member / coach of your club do you have?

"I first sat in the VE Board 40 years ago too. Richard Callicott encouraged me to put back into the sport and I took on several roles over the years. International Lead, Coaching Lead and National Squads Lead.
I am Secretary of South East Volleyball Association and organise the annual SEVA tournament and the training and coaches for our Inter Regional Squads.
I am currently Coaching lead for the Surrey Volleyball Association after being Secretary for many years.
I am currently Coaching lead for the Sussex VA after being treasurer for many years.
I organise and run the annual Ashcombe Tournament, a fund raising event for our club and wonderful festival of sport for all.
I volunteered for London 2012 and was fortunate enough to be given the role of Athlete Manager for the Olympic Beach Competition. What a wonderful experience for us all.
My son Sam plays for Sheffield VC and is a volunteer coach as well as player and also now Chairman. He has decided to put back into volleyball after so many good years with Sheffield".

How do you encourage new volunteers into the sport?

"I would encourage all of you to think about volunteering either as a coach or administrator. Volleyball needs all the support you can give it to help it grow".

Thank-you for your time, Freda!
